DATE:Circa 13000~3000 B.C.
LOCATION: SANCHIEN VILLAGE, TAITUNG COUNTY
DESCRIPTION:
At this site there are
dozens of caves carved by the sea into the coastal
cliffs of Sanchien Village. Between 1968 and 1970,
Professor Sung Wen-hsun and his archeological team
from National Taiwan University made five excavations
here, uncovering the remains of a Neolithic culture
and, at deeper strata, a rich store of artifacts from
the Changpin culture-an advanced Paleolithic culture
and the oldest prehistoric community discovered in
Taiwan to date. This site is the most representative
and significant of this early culture. Among the artifacts
unearthed is a large store of pebble tools, such as
flaking tools, and stone axe heads, as well as fine
white stone tools with crudely shaped blades or points.
Bone implements and animal and fish bones were also
uncovered.
